Last post, we mentioned a recent pirate attack. And unfortunately, that episode was not an isolated case, and the Indonesia’s waters are the world’s most dangerous.

While the global average of pirate attacks decreased from 177 to 138 attacks in 2013, the number of attacks increased 50% in Indonesian during the very same period. Alarming, isn’t it?

25% of the cases reported in the first semester of 2013 had three or more incidents, especially in the ports of Dumais and Belawan.

And African waters are dangerous are well, with a similar scenario. The vessels are attacked while sailing 12 miles off the coast or even on international waters.

And even worse is the fact that not only the vessels may be damaged, but holding people hostage and kidnapping is common as well! The first half of 2013, 7 people were held hostage in Indonesia, and 16 in Malaysia. In Nigeria, there were 28 kidnapping episodes and 15 hostages. In the Ivory Coast the number was 31, and in Somalia, 21.

We triple check our routine at sea and pay three times more attention in order to stay away from any approach.

And to ensure you’re protected on land, count on HDI.
