Saving water is one of the most important rules aboard SY Kat! Whether for showering or laundry.
Many don’t know, but we have a washing machine aboard. We use it only when we are at a port or marina, and always make sure we use it rationally. The rule is: always use it in its full capacity (12kg), only 1 washing cycle. We calculate we use approximately 60 liters per washing cycle.
In order to save water, that’s what we do when we are sailing: we remove the excess of dirt (sand and mud) with sea water. After that, we fill two buckets of water: one with soap and another with clean water, for washing. Sometimes we are lucky and manage to wash our heavy clothes, such as coats, with rain water.
We save energy when drying clothes as well: we use the wind! We hang everything in the mainropes around SY Kat! We use many clothes pins so nothing flies away! Those who have visited us have probably seen a similar scene. Just the other day, we were surprised by rain and had to run to collect our towels!
