Australia has a very unique history, which contributes to its population being quite different. The country is a rich aggregation of ethnicities and customs that is hard to find worldwide.
Today, Australia has a population of about 23 million people. More than 75% of those have an ancestor that is not Australian. About 2% of Australians have indigenous origins and 43% have at least one parent who came from another country. This data comes from the 2011 census of Australia.
Approximately 30% of the population was born in another nation. Of these, the majority comes from England, New Zealand and China. About 8.5% of Australians were born in countries that do not speak English.
You can find a total of 200 languages spoken in Australia, with such diversity of origin. About 16% of Australians speak a language other than English, the most common ones being Chinese, Italian, Greek and Arabic. In addition, there are about 50 indigenous languages spoken by Australians.
Such a diversity of backgrounds also explains the variety of religions concentrated in Australia. Of the total population, 61% belong to around 70 denominations of Christianity, and 2.4% are Buddhist, 2.1% Muslim, 0.4% Jewish and more than 7 thousand practitioners of traditional Aboriginal religions. There are also 22% who do not practice any religion.
When we travel the world, we acquire a new respect for differences. In such a diverse place like Australia, it is possible to have contact with many different cultures and, in turn, enrich your own experience.
