For many months, the Orient Expedition team worked hard so Sailboat Kat would be impeccably built. It took months of dedication, since the first screw, the first keel test, the furniture and the first test on the water.

Ge to know the crew: Pierre and Emmanuel Schurmann

Born on September 1, 1968, Pierre is Vilfredo and Heloísa’s first son. When the Schurmann Family left on their first great adventure, 10 years at sea, Pierre was 15 years old. At a certain point, he landed on the USA to study Administration. In 1994, Pierre came back to Brazil to work and plan Magalhães Global Adventure. Currently he is an investor in several technology companies.

And the Orient Expedition will be the first great trip in which the third Schurmann generation will be present: Emmanuel, Pierre’s son, will also be a part of the crew.

Emmanuel has been studying to sailing and diving courses, and also taking mechanic, cooking and Chinese classes. Even though this will be his first time around the world, Emmanuel already takes part in long-distance trips.

The third part of the trip

The Orient Expedition has its most special arrival: Asia. The most mystic of all continents, rich in details and history will be explored between February and June of 2016.

The destinations of the third chapter are:

Okinawa – Japan

Shangai – China

Hong Kong – China

Guangzhou or Xiamen – china

Ho Chi Minh – Vietnam

Natuna – Indonesia

Singkawang – Indonesia

Singapore

Jakarta – Indonesia

The great prize in this part of the game will be an oriental party on board of Aysso, in Itajaí! Get ready to play and keep up with the Schurmann Family on all ports they sail.

The Orient Expedition will become a game!

Besides following every mile sailed by the Schurmann Family, during the Orient Expedition you will also be the captain of your own boat and sail on a fun adventure with real prizes.

The game will be launched on the same day as the Expedition starts, September 21st. You will create your own boat and also have the possibility to call two people to be your crew.

After your crew is complete, your mission is to sail through the seas of the world answering questions, discovering curiosities and playing minigames that will benefit your boat.

Schurmann History: Magalhães Global Adventure

The Schurmann Family is thirsty for adventure, and that is the reason why even before coming back from their first great expedition, they had already thought of the next.

The idea was to sail through one of the most famous routes in history, officially known as the first circumnavigation: the route sailed by Ferdinand of Magellan.

Called Magalhães Global Adventure, the second Schurmann Expedition was planned for 3 years, and happened between 1997 and 2000.

A fixed crew was: Vilfredo, Heloísa, David and Kat. In some parts of the trip, Pierre and Wilhelm joined the family.

Magalhães Global Adventure sailed from Porto Belo, Santa Catarina on November 23, 1997, and returned to Brazil on April 22, 2000, celebrating 500 years of the discovery of Brazil. Check out their route:

Get to know the crew: Wilhelm and David Schurmann

When it comes to adventure, we soon think about the Schurmann Family. Today, get to know two other members of the crew: David and Wilhelm Schurmann.

David is Vilfredo and Heloísa’s second son and decided to study Cinema in New Zealand. At the age of 19, he was working as director of a TV program, besides directing movies, TV series and advertisements. His expertise was also used to register the greatest moments of the family expeditions, resulting in the movie “The World in two Round Trips”, which talks a little about Kat. David is also in charge of all the planning and development of the Orient Expedition.

Wilhelm is their third son, and spent the longest time onboard, 10 years. For a decade, he studied via correspondence, learned 3 languages and visited more than 42 countries.

When he was still a child, he found a way to always stay in touch with the sea and learned to windsurf, becoming a professional athlete that is known both national and internationally, with more than 180 medals and trophies.

Wilhelm worked in all stages of Kat’s construction and will be the first mate on board.

The second part of the trip

After sailing through South America and the Antarctic, the Orient Expedition will continue to sail – this time on the French Polynesia and Oceania.

This part of the trip is supposed to happen between April 2015 and April 2016.

French Polynesia and Oceania are amazing places and will take us even closer to where it all began in 1421!

Getting ready for the trip

As from today, there are only 20 days left tfor the Orient Expedition to start!

So close to September 21st, it is essential to think about all the remaining details – after all, the sailboat Kat will be the crew’s home for two years!

Before going on water, Heloísa and Wilhelm measured the beds inside the cabins:

When the boat went on the water, everybody on the team worked exhaustively:

And Wilhelm dug the hole to test the keel:

After the test on the water, the boat was anchored at Vila da Regata, in Itajaí – Santa Catarina, which is where the Expedition will start.

Schurmann History: 10 years at sea

After a 10-year preparation, the Schurmann Family left Florianópolis (Capital of Santa Catarina) on board of Guapo, on April 14th, 1984, leaving the safety of mainland behind in order to pursue a family dream: live at the sea.

At first, the idea as to sail only for two or three years, but the adventure was going so well that they decided to continue and not set a date to come back.

It was not always easy – but with love, patience, humor, corage, resignation and a lot of organization, the Expedition 10 Years at Sea was an amazing and unforgettable trip!

By having a teenager and two children on board, Heloísa became her sons’ teacher, who studied by mail. When the time came, each one landed and kept on buiding their carreer: Pierre went to the USA to study Administration, David graduated as a Movie Director in New Zealand and Wilhelm started his carreer in windsurfing, always on board with his parents.
