The great day has come! Although we are far, our hearts get warm to see Brazil hosting the Olympic Games, making Rio de Janeiro the center of the world of sports for a few days.
In our travels, we’ve been through some places that hosted the Olympic Games. A few months ago, we were in Australia, which has hosted the games twice in its history, in 1956 and in 2000. It is the only country in Oceania which has hosted the event. As a matter of fact, Brazil is the first country in South America to host the Olympic Games. Congratulations, Brazil!
Another place that was on the itinerary of the Orient Expedition and has hosted Olympics is China. The country was the organizer of the Olympics 2008. We also passed by Japan, which hosted two Summer Olympics and two Winter Olympics.
Since the Olympics began in its modern edition, there were 26 Olympic Summer Games in 22 cities around the world and 22 Olympic Winter Games in 19 locations. Besides these, there were also situations where the games had to be canceled because of a war, the more notorious case being of the 1940 Olympics in Tokyo, canceled with the outbreak of World War II.
Another curiosity are the 1908 events: Rome was to have hosted these games, but they were moved to London after an eruption of the Vesuvius volcano, two years before, which killed 100 people and devastated the city of Naples. Thus, they employed a lot of resources to rebuild the city and it would not be possible to organize the Olympic Games.
Events like this show how nature can surprise us and regain control of events. We hope to always seek a balance, respecting the natural resources and species. Solví works with “green” solutions for companies that want to collaborate with the environment.
