And on the 14, Wilhelm lived an unforgettable moment when coming back to where he attended high school.
When he got there, the principal took him to very same classroom in which he had classes in 1990! There was a group of 20 7th grade students: the boys were wearing gray lava lava outfits and the girls, burgundy dresses with yellow ribbons on their braids. Their age was the same as Wilhelm’s in 1990. His Geography teacher also came to the school when he heard Wilhelm would be there.
Principal Mr. Peni was proud to introduce Wilhelm, who had been his classmate.
Wilhelm introduced himself and he was interrupted right when he started speaking:
“Good morning! You studied here and are a former student. We want you to feel that you are back to Vava’u High School. Here’s a uniform for you!”
Wilhelm put it on and was applauded by students and teachers. For 30 minutes, he talked about his life and showed pictures of his life and his career as a windsurf athlete. He also talked about the Orient Expedition, the sustainability system in SY Kat and the places he visited. He showed the importance of dreaming and going after one’s dream!
Some students asked him questions, thanked him and asked for him to stay: we have another surprise for you! The students stood up and, along with a teacher, and a beautiful song that they had written and rehearsed the previous day. We were all touched by this tender gesture.
A fun, happy and curious group made Wilhelm’s visit, 25 years later, very special.
